Main events

The success of these events was possible due to the support and participation of volunteers and donors

 

National Council of La Raza,

July 11-15, 2008: The largest national Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S. works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans in the U.S. The Annual Council of La Raza Conference was held in San Diego California, and included the Latino Youth Summit which was attended by nine of our youth.

 

17th Annual Recognition Luncheon,

September 24, 2008: a total of 650 people and 42 corporate sponsors attended LCDA’s 17th anniversary celebration to recognize sponsors, volunteers and donors. Honored guest speaker was V. Burns Hargis, President of Oklahoma State University.

 

Fall Festival,

October 17, 2008: The “Fall Fest” was organized by the Latino Clubs Coordinator with the help of High School Latino Club officers and members. There were a total of 27 volunteers, 204 parents and 218 children served during the event. The event was made possible by the donations obtained by the Latino Club members. During the event we had music, games and dance performances.

 

Candlelight Vigil,

October 20, 2008: This event brings awareness to the severity of the issue of domestic violence in our state by commemorating the victims that have died as a result of family violence. A total of 40 people from collaborating agencies and the community participated.

 

Red Ribbon Week,

October 22-30, 2008: During Red Ribbon Week LCDA visits public schools and hosts

a variety of activities targeting drug abuse prevention, and raising awareness of the

damaging effects of drugs. This event is marked by students wearing red ribbons every day throughout the week, and is observed nationwide. Approximately 800 students participated. The schools started off the week by asking students to pledge to remain alcohol and drug free.

 

Christmas Party,

December 13, 2008: This year LCDA’s Christmas Party provided Christmas presents

for 392 Families, with 602 children receiving Christmas toys. The event was hosted by OCCC and sponsored by the McDonald’s Corporation and Lopez Foods to celebrate the traditional Christmas Holiday.

 

Martin Luther King Parade,

January 19, 2009: Latino Club members from Oklahoma City Public School and Civil Air Patrol (CAP) students participated in the parade this year including 20 youth and five staff members.

 

Feed the Children,

March 18, 2009: Feed the children – Truck Sponsorship delivered 800 boxes of food and personal care items and two pallets of assorted goods to the community. The Oklahoma Blazers Hockey team sponsored this event, as they passionately handed out boxes to 400 Latino families at the LCDA.

 

Latino Health Fair,

May 21, 2009: Approximately 582 screenings for cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, and dental exams were performed for the 200 individuals that participated in this event. Information and education about immunizations, nutrition, HIV, breast cancer and individual tobacco counseling was provided. Participants had the opportunity to visit with a doctor about their test results.

 

World without Violence,

April 3, 2009: Over 58 families with 140 children and youth exchanged violent toys for non-violent toys. Awareness and educational activities for parents were provided. The United States Marine Corp Reserve and the OCPD sponsored this event.

 

Jim Thorpe Golf Tournament,

April, 2009: A total of 700 people participated in this fundraising event which was held at the Oak Tree Country Club in partnership with the Jim Thorpe Association, Chesapeake Energy Corporation and Lopez Foods. This event provides the LCDA with visibility in the community and financial support for programs.

 

Senior Banquet,

May 26, 2009: Ninety local Latino students who successfully graduated from high school were honored and forty-one scholarships were awarded to students demonstrating outstanding leadership skills and community involvement. There were 13 high schools who participated in this event and over 300 attendees who formed part of the achievement and graduation celebration.
