The success of these events was possible due to the support and participation of volunteers and donors
National Council of la Raza, July 5-12, 2006: The largest national Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S. Works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans in U.S. The Annual Council of La Raza Conference was held in Los Angeles, California from July 5-12, 2006 and attended by six staff. The Latino Youth Summit was attended by 13 of our youth. Oklahoma had a large representation with educational, health and individuals from different sectors participating in this event.
Back to School Celebration, August 5th, 2006: A total of 1643 people attended this event celebrating the onset of children and youth beginning the school year. A total of 800 backpacks and supplies were distributed. Community partners included the OCPD, Oklahoma National Guard, Feed the Children and Wall-Mart.
15th Annual Meeting Luncheon, September 26th, 2006: a total of 700 people attended and 34 corporate companies supported LCDA’s 15th anniversary celebration, recognizing sponsors, volunteers and donors. Honored guest speaker was the Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett.
Youth Rally Education, October 14th, 2006: 800 persons including the OCPD, Oklahoma Army National Guard, youth and staff gathered at Capitol Hill High School to promote educational equity in education and justice for all youth.
Red Ribbon Week, October 22-25, 2006: The LCDA celebrated Red Ribbon Week partnering with elementary schools, Capitol Hill & Rockwell Middle School in Oklahoma City area. Up to 2400 students in schools participated during drug awareness week.
Candlelight Vigil, October 26th, 2006: This event brings awareness to the severity of the issue of domestic violence in our state by commemorating all of the victims that have died as a result of family violence. A total of 100 people from the community and collaborating agencies participated.
Fall Festival, October 25th, 2006: The “Fall Fest” was organized by the Latino Clubs Coordinator with the help of High School Latino Club officers and Latino Club members. There were a total of 39 volunteers, 77 parents and 174 children served during the event. The event was made possible by the donations obtained from the Latino Club members. During the event we had music, games and dance performances.
Christmas Party, December 17th, 2006: LCDA’s Christmas Party brought in a total of 1548 adults and teenagers who were provided seasonal festivities, music, and celebration. There were 831 children who also received Christmas toys. The event was hosted by McDonald’s Corporation and LCDA to celebrate the traditional Christmas Holiday. Seventy-eight volunteers helping.
World without Violence, March 16th, 2007: Up to 270 children and youth exchanged violent toys for non-violent toys. Awareness and educational activities for parents. The United States Marine Corp Reserve, the OCPD and Pepsi Bottling Group assisted with this event.
Jim Thorpe Golf Tournament, April 16th, 2007: A total of 700 people participated. This fundraising event was held at Oak Tree Country Club in partnership with the Jim Thorpe Association, Chesapeake Energy Corporation and Lopez Foods providing visibility and financial support for LCDA programs.
Senior Banquet, May 26th, 2007: Honored were 112 local Latino students who successfully graduated from high school. Thirty two scholarships were awarded to students demonstrating outstanding leadership skills and community involvement. There were 14 high schools who participated in this event and over 400 attendees were part of the achievement and graduation celebration.
Mariachi Festival, June 1st and 3rd, 2007, The Mariachi Festival inaugural event introduced and educated the community on Latino culture. In partnership with the Junior League of Oklahoma City and presented by McDonald’s and Lopez Foods, the Sunday concert raised funds for LCDA in which 1000 people were in attendance.
